Corporate Accountability
As State Auditor, Hector Balderas made it his mission to hold governments and corporations that defrauded taxpayers accountable. As a United States Senator, he will bring that same approach, taking on an entrenched Wall Street and Washington culture that believes it is above the law.
Hector rejects the failed approach of the past that bailed out the mega banks with taxpayer funds—with no requirements mandating that they invest that money back into the economy, even after some engaged in predatory lending and deceptive practices, and gambled on our homes and retirement savings like game pieces. Only in Washington would it make sense to give those who nearly ruined our economy billions in taxpayers’ money and then sit idly by as they rake in big profits and raise CEO salaries to the same level as before the crash.
And to this day, not one Wall Street executive who was responsible for the economic collapse has been held accountable or gone to jail. That is simply unacceptable.
Hector Balderas will work to hold Wall Street accountable and ensure that Washington looks out for everyday New Mexicans.
As Senator, he will:
- Work to ensure that those responsible for the economic collapse are held legally responsible;
- Address the growing foreclosure crisis created by the big banks, by proposing a real loan modification program that makes monthly payments affordable to all those who put their hopes and dreams—as well as much of their money—into payments on mortgages for their homes;
- Stop any attempt to water down recently enacted Wall Street regulations – and work to make sure regulators have to the tools to protect consumers and taxpayers.
It’s time for everyday New Mexicans to start having their voices heard in Washington. As Senator, Hector Balderas will fight to make sure their voices are heard.
