Many years ago, when he was serving in the state legislature, my two children, then young teenagers, went with a few friends from school to lobby against the DOMA act. They came home that afternoon saying that they had met "the coolest person.” After being turned away from one legislator's office after another, they had come to Hector’s office and he met with them. He let them talk, and only after they had finished did he tell them what his own views were--and why. He then gave them some pointers on how to present their arguments more effectively. They felt so encouraged about the political process after that meeting. He really made a difference for some people still too young to vote.
